In July 2009 LSI launched a new generation of high-performance MegaRAID® SATA+SAS RAID controller cards based on 6Gb/s SAS technology.

With innovative new 6Gb/s SAS product features and support for SATA, SAS and solid-state drives (SSDs), the MegaRAID 9200 series controllers provide small- to mid-sized enterprises with superior levels of RAID performance and scalability for internal and external storage.

The MegaRAID 9200 series controllers, featuring the LSISAS2108 6Gb/s SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC), double the data transfer rates of their 3Gb/s predecessors to deliver industry-leading performance with up to 2.88 GB/s in sequential reads and 1.87 GB/s in sequential writes. 

LSI Expands 6Gb/s SATA+SAS Portfolio to include HBAs

More recently, in October 2009 LSI announced the expansion of their 6Gb/s SATA+SAS product family, to include high-performance 6Gb/s Host Bus Adapters (HBAs). The LSITM SAS 9200 series HBAs, based on the LSISAS2008 6Gb/s SAS controller IC, offer new levels of performance and scalability for internal and external direct-attached storage deployments using SATA and SAS disk drives.

New 6Gb/s SAS product features include support for self-discovery/self-configuring expanders and longer cables, simplifying the deployment of larger and more complex storage topologies. The new controllers also bring standardised zoning which improves storage efficiencies by allowing multiple servers to share storage devices. 

6Gb/s solutions provide a boost to system performance that can double the data transfer rate to and from hard disk drives. Support more video streams, more online transactions and faster backups right now and the move to end-to-end 6Gb/s solutions – featuring 6Gb/s SATA or SAS hard disk drives and LSI 6Gb/s SATA+SAS HBAs or RAID controllers, to achieve even greater levels of performance.

A new data security feature is also available within the 6Gb/s line-up for customers that are concerned about storage and data security. LSI SafeStore™ Encryption Services offers instant secure erase and local key management for self-encrypting drives (SEDs). This technology represents a significant step forward in securing a drive’s data from any unauthorised access or modification resulting from theft, loss, or repurposing of drives. It provides instant Secure Erase, which erases SEDs in less than a second, enabling secure drive returns or reuse. Local key management locks and secures SEDs in the event of theft or a data breach.
